Milia are tiny white spots found in people of all ages. They can generally be found around the eyes and on the upper part of the cheeks. Basically, they are a type of harmless mini cyst full of keratin(keratin is a substance that gives our skin, hair and nails structure). Keratin is good stuff, but in milia, it’s just in the wrong place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milia are not spots, so don’t try to squeeze them – you will just make a red unsightly mess. They have nothing to do with your pores – they are in fact under your epidermis – the outer layer of our skin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are not harmful or infectious and are not caused by germs or bacteria. You can be genetically predisposed to them – ask your Mum if she suffers from them too. Some people just get the odd one – if this is true, you probably just need to review your skin care and use more appropriate products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you only have the odd milia that just won’t go, the best way to get rid of it is to go to a beauty salon where they are qualified to do milia removal. When you ask about this skill, only agree to attend if they sound confident and are qualified in this service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have lots on milia, a dermatologist is the best person to deal with them through laser treatments – Very simple and with only a little redness for a couple of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, how about preventing milia ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have a thorough cleansing routine. Exfoliate about three times a week with a gentle exfoliant. Use a good toner and keep your skin moisturised with a moisturiser that is suitable for your skin type.A clay mask use at home a couple of times a week can also help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What ever you do DO NOT PICK THE MILIA OR USE A NEEDLE TO REMOVE IT – IF YOU ARE NOT TRAINED TO DO THIS YOU WILL SCAR YOUR FACE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
